Korean Skincare Routine Demystified

Korean Skincare Routine Demystified

Achieving that perfect “glass skin” that K-Beauty gurus have mastered can involve a lot of research and experimentation. This is all part of the fun, but allow us to help break it down for you.

Step one: Oil Cleanser
To remove makeup and other impurities put on our skin throughout the day, start with an oil cleanser. Massage it over your dry face and neck and then add a splash of lukewarm water to emulsify the cleanser. Massage again and then rinse everything off!

Examples of oil cleansers:
Missha Green Tea Makeup Remover
Burt’s Bees Micellar Cleansing Water
Etude House Real Art Mild Cleansing Oil

Step two: Water-Based Cleanser

Use a water-based cleanser to remove any remaining impurities from your face.

Laneige Moisturising Foam Cleanser
COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser
Neogen Real Flower Cleansing Water-Calendula

Step three: Exfoliator

Exfoliating your skin should be a regular part of your skincare regimen! When old skin cells start to pile up on the surface of the skin, it can leave skin looking dull, rough, and dry. Also, the build-up of dead skin cells can result in excess oil and clogged pores, leading to breakouts! K-beauty gurus recommend exfoliating twice a week.

Examples of exfoliators:

Skin Food Black Sugar Mask
Brooklyn Botany Charcoal Scrub
Neogen Bio-Peel Gauze Cleaning Wine

Step Four: Toner

The purpose of toner is to rebalance the skin’s pH and start the moisturizing process after cleansing.

Examples of toners:

Laneige Essential Power Skin Toner for Combination to Oily Skin
Thayers Witch Hazel Alcohol Free Toner – Lavender
Pixi Glow Tonic

Step Five: Essence

An essence is made for hydrating and aiding skin repair and cell turnover. There are all types of essences designed to do different things!

Examples of Essences:
COSRX Galactomyces 95 Tone Balancing Essence
Farsali Unicorn Essence
Skinfood Royal Honey Propolis Enrich Essence

Step Six: Treatments

This includes serums, which are concentrated versions of essences designed to treat one problem, and spot treatments. Vitamin C serums, for example, treat hyperpigmentation. This would also be a good time to use COSRX Acne Pimple Master Patches and light therapy to spot-treat acne. If you are using a serum or essence that can react to light, such as Vitamin C, we recommend using light therapy between Steps 3 and 4.

Examples of Treatments:
The Ordinary Buffet Serum
COSRX Acne Pimple Master Patch
POLY LED Blue Light Therapy

Step Seven: Sheet Masks

Sheet masks are face masks in sheet form: they contain rich hydrators and other skin goodies. Usually made out of fiber, cotton, cellulose, or coconut pulp, it has holes for your eyes and mouth. Put on your face for around 20 minutes.

Examples of Sheet Masks:
TATCHA Luminous Dewy Skin Mask
Miss Spa Hydrate Sheet Mask
Garnier SkinActive Super Hydrating Sheet Mask Glow Boosting

Step Eight: Eye Cream

Because the skin around your eyes is delicate, it needs special care! Eye creams are designed to hydrate and repair skin.

Examples of Eye Creams:
COSRX Honey Ceramide Eye Cream
Burt’s Bees Intense Hydration Eye Cream

Step Nine: Moisturizer

Using a moisturizer can really help brighten and clear your skin! If you’re dehydrated and your skin is dry, you could be overproducing oil, which causes breakouts! If your skin is dry and not overproducing oil, your skin will look dull.

Examples of Moisturizers:
Skyn Iceland Pure Cloud Cream
COSRX Hyaluronic Acid Intensive Cream
Laneige Water Bank Moisture Cream

Step Ten: Sunscreen

Sunscreen is a very important part of any skincare routine! Overexposure to the sun can cause premature aging and wrinkles, not to mention skin cancer!

Examples of Sunscreen:
Klairs Mid-Day Blue Sun Lotion SPF 40/PA++
SUPERGOOP! 100% Mineral Sunscreen Mist with Marigold Extract Broad Spectrum SPF 30
